CHILDREN'S OPTIONS
-
NHS & Private
Children's orthodontic
treatment generally involves the use of fixed
braces or 'train tracks', although they can be preceded
by the use of removable
or functional appliances and, on occasions, extractions
of certain teeth (carried out by their own General Dentist.)
Most orthodontic
requirements for children are identified by their General
Dentist during regular treatments.

Under the NHS, a
patient is normally first referred by their own dentist and then
placed on our waiting list for an orthodontic assessment. The
length of the waiting list will vary according to the location.
The Government has
now introduced changes to the way NHS care is funded. All children
now have to be assessed and graded in order for us to ascertain
their NHS eligibility.
Following the orthodontic assessment, if they qualify for NHS
treatment, then treatment can commence (usually after a short
waiting period).
If your child does
not qualify, there will be the option to proceed on a private
basis.
The choice of whether to use the NHS services or private treatment
is a personal one. It is often determined by the type of appliances
required eg tooth coloured braces and some specialist appliances
which are only provided on a private basis, or the timings of
appointments.
