These
consist of square-shaped individual blocks, called brackets,
which are glued to the front of each tooth and metal rings,
or bands, which fit over the back tooth. The brackets and
bands are linked together with a fine wire. This wire is
altered by the orthodontist at each visit and these three
main components exert a force on the teeth. This gentle
force causes the teeth to move over time, but does not damage
them.
Ceramic brackets
blend with your teeth
Patients
may choose either 'stainless steel' or specially designed
'ceramic' brackets which blend in with the natural colour
of their teeth, making them far less noticeable.
Fixed Braces
take about 6 - 18 months to work, with regular visits
(usually 4 - 6 weeks apart) needed so that adjustments
can be made.
